Milling is a widely used machining technique in the industry. This process allows material to be removed from a part using a cutting tool called a milling cutter. Unlike turning, the workpiece is steady and the cutting tool is in rotation. The movement of the workpiece in the tool or of the tool in the workpiece (bedmilling) then allows the material to be removed progressively.
In the early days of milling, milling machines were manually operated. Technological advances then enabled manufacturers to digitise these milling machines, and the numerical control system was introduced.
Milling machines can therefore be divided into CNC machining centres with digital control, but also into conventional milling machines.
