Grinding or sharpening in precision mechanics refers to the action by which an operator uses a machine tool, more precisely a CNC or conventional grinding machine, to remove a small amount of material from a mechanical part or cutting tool. This process allows for the dimensional adjustment of the geometric tolerances of a part, whether flat or cylindrical, while improving its surface finish.

However, care must be taken not to confuse the grinding process with traditional machining, which is characterized by the material removal.

Metal grinding and sharpening machines are equipped with grinding wheels. It is the friction between the grinding wheel and the workpiece that allows abrasive machining (otherwise known as grinding). In many cases, a high dimensional accuracy can be achieved. These second hand high-precision machines therefore allow for high-tolerance adjustments to be made while maintaining increased repeatability. The grinding process is now the most efficient way to achieve accuracy in the order of a few micrometers (microns), while respecting the profiles and angles of cuts.

This type of machine tool is generally used to prepare surfaces that will be exposed to some friction.

If the grinding wheel is previously diamond-coated, i.e., it has been machined into a particular shape, it will give a particular profile to the mechanical part.
